Hi, I’m Tyler.

Last spring, I spent months ferociously decorating and rearranging my apartment as a distraction during an otherwise untenable year. At a certain point after the third or fourth iteration, I knew I needed to introduce some structure — nay, a north star — for where I’d take the room next (and for where it would stay, for a few months at least).

In that moment, I decided I’d only include colors that felt like comfort to me — warm hues that conjured up memories of toasty ciabatta, a perfectly stacked Italian sub, or the Katz’s Deli scene from When Harry Met Sally.

I called this moment of design inspiration my sandwich palette. It started with a hearty foundation: beige like the spongy inside of a crusty baguette, then expanded to include a mortadella-adjacent muted pink, pops of shredded lettuce green, and a mellow mustard yellow. If I’m being honest, there were some mayo (Hellman’s, of course) moments in the color story, too. When I really stop to think about it, I realize now that I spent a couple of very inside months in 2020 decorating my apartment to look like a sandwich.

The truth is that it not only turned out to be a design theory I enjoyed testing to its limits — it also evolved into one of my favorite things to write about in 2020. The sandwich palette put fun, relatable, accessible words to an idea that at first felt vague and amorphous; and if there’s one way I’d want my writing style described, it’s exactly that. Extra mayo.
